Maartje Veeke

IT & Development Manager at NN Group

“At NN, everyone is happy to help you with your development”

Seizing opportunities and showing ownership—that, according to Maartje Veeke, is the key to developing yourself. Since joining NN in 2020, she has grown from Scrum Master to IT & Development Manager. “Want to take the next step? Say it out loud. At NN, people genuinely think along with you. Thanks to my managers, I’ve already made great progress. And in my current role, I want to be just as supportive a manager for my colleagues.”

A career switch during the pandemic
When Maartje started at NN, the world of IT was completely new to her. “I worked in the travel industry, but when the pandemic hit, I knew: now is the time for something different.” To discover what suited her, she spoke with friends. “I realised that I’m good at organising, I enjoy coaching, and I’m a people person. A friend who already worked at NN told me they were looking for someone with those qualities. He sent me the vacancy for Scrum Master in the Public Cloud domain. I had no idea what those terms meant, but the role turned out to be exactly what I was looking for: helping engineers work more efficiently, connecting colleagues, improving communication with clients, and making the team more visible internally, for example through events.”

Hired for her character
Maartje was soon hired for the role. “My manager saw the right match thanks to my character and potential. Together with an Agile Coach, he helped me get started and gave me the right tools to begin. I also took training courses to expand my knowledge.” Maartje started as Scrum Master for one team in the Public Cloud domain, but soon took on responsibility for all teams. “Public Cloud provides an AWS and Azure platform for IT teams within NN to build cloud infrastructure. The ‘clients’ are therefore NN’s engineers.”

A logical next step
After two years as Scrum Master, a reorganisation took place. “As a result, my role would disappear. I was actually fine with that; it felt like a good moment to try something new.” The same reorganisation created a new role: IT & Development Manager. “My manager thought this role would suit me, and I also saw it as a great next step. So I moved into this position, for the same teams.” Knowing the transition was coming, Maartje had already taken on extra HR tasks, such as recruitment, in her role as Scrum Master. “That gave me a good preview and helped me prepare for my new role.

From Public Cloud to Engineering Experience & Platforms
“As IT & Development Manager, I’m mainly a people manager,” says Maartje. “I’m there for my people: I make sure they feel at home, enjoy their work, develop themselves, and collaborate well.” In June 2025, she moved to the Engineering Experience & Platforms domain, where she fulfils the same role. “After nearly five years in Public Cloud, I was ready for a new place within NN. I discussed this with various colleagues who thought along with me. In the end, my previous manager saw a great opportunity in his new domain.” The move turned out to be a perfect fit. “It’s a completely different team, working on a completely different product. For me, it feels much more tangible.”

Driven and skilled colleagues
Within Engineering Experience & Platforms, Maartje leads three teams: ServiceNow Platform, Zelda Internal Developer Portal, and Maker Portal. “The ServiceNow Platform is NN’s service management tool, including a user portal for creating incidents, requesting services, and reading knowledge articles. The Internal Developer Portal helps engineers navigate NN’s technical landscape. It’s the starting point for sharing popular products and services and making the team behind them visible. The Maker Portal is the central place where all technical documentation comes together.” What does Maartje enjoy most about her role? “I now work with completely new teams, with different personalities, ways of working, and products. It’s fantastic to discover that. They’re all driven, skilled, and enthusiastic people, passionate about the products and services we deliver.”

Development requires your own initiative
That NN offers many opportunities to grow and develop is clear from Maartje’s career. “You just have to speak up. If you do, everyone is happy to help you. At first, I found it daunting to start in a completely new role, but I could always turn to my own manager and other managers for advice. That really helped me to take steps.” And she’s far from finished learning. “Soon I’ll start a course in strategic management. NN gives me the chance to do this alongside my work.”

Show what you’re capable of
Now Maartje helps her colleagues with their growth. “I do everything I can to make sure they enjoy their work. I listen to their wishes and see what’s possible. For example, I’m currently looking into whether someone can do a relevant master’s degree at NN’s expense, and also get study hours.” For anyone considering a job at NN, she has this advice: “Don’t be put off by the requirements in a job advert. Apply and have the conversation. Show your potential and convince others of what you can do!”
